In September 2020, our Centre organised one face-to-face and one online townhall with the Federal MP, Andrew Leigh on the issue of mitochondrial donation. This was the inaugural online and in-person townhall for our Connecting to Parliament project, which engaged with the constituents of Fenner in Canberra’s northern and western suburbs. Andrew Leigh MP declared that his conscience vote on mitochondrial donation will be guided by the conversations that unfolded in these townhalls. Speaking on 2CC Canberra on 30 September that year. We're working with folks at Ohio State University and the University of Canberra, who are among the best in the world of deliberative democracy. Mendonça, Prof Nicole Curato, Prof Selen Ercan, A/Prof Hans Asenbaum Funded by the CNPq – National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (Brazil). This project examines the relationship between complex issues and democracy, focusing on the challenges that emerging technologies pose to democratic governance. Complex issues often remain difficult for citizens to fully understand, which can reinforce technocratic and expert-driven forms of decision-making. At the same time, they reshape social and political life by transforming how people interact, deliberate, experience inequalities, and respond to fundamental questions of collective wellbeing and survival. The scale and urgency of these challenges can also create pressures for more authoritarian forms of governance, given the time, uncertainty, and contestation inherent in democratic decision-making. The project focuses on two contemporary issues with far-reaching political implications: artificial intelligence and genome editing. It examines efforts to democratise decision-making in these areas, with particular attention to civil society mobilisation, regulatory debates, individual and collective forms of resistance, and participatory initiatives that open expert knowledge to public scrutiny and citizen deliberation. The research is organised around three interconnected strands. First, it analyses parliamentary debates, including legislation, bills under consideration, and public hearings on artificial intelligence and genome editing. Second, it maps the public agenda by examining debates across the news media and digital public sphere. Third, it identifies and analyses democratic innovations and other political initiatives that seek to broaden public participation in decisions about these technologies. The project is led by Professor Ricardo F. Mendonça (Department of Political Science, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy, University of Canberra). It brings together 15 researchers from five Brazilian universities—MARGEM/UFMG, UNILA, UFG, UFPA, and UFPE—and is developed in close collaboration with the Centre for Deliberative Democracy through the work of Professor Selen Ercan, Associate Professor Hans Asenbaum, and Centre’s Adjunct Professor Nicole Curato.

The research report was completed in September 2022 and the launch was hosted by Australian National University’s Herbert and Valmae Freilich Project for the Study of Bigotry. Panel speakers included Pia van de Zandt (Director, Connected Communities, NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet), Dr Emily Corner (Senior Lecturer of Criminology, Centre for Social Research and Methods, ANU), and Dr Jordan McSwiney (Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance). Citizens Assemble - Triple J podcast on climate assemblies Professor Nicole Curato of the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance was part of a panel of experts interviewed on Triple J on 4 October 2022, discussing deliberative approaches to climate solutions. Deliberative approaches to decision-making on important topics that affect everyone are being considered as viable elements to the solution for worldwide problems. An example of this was in 2019, when 150 French citizens were asked to come up with their country’s climate policy and were told that their ideas would be adopted. Said Nicole, ‘There is a strong argument to say that Democracy plays a role in crafting legitimate climate solutions. Meaning, no one…no climate scientist, no economist, no ethicist, no activist…no one has the monopoly of good ideas, and correct answers on climate issues.’ Read more The evolution of environmental politics The Politics of the Earth: Environmental Discourses has been listed in The Australian’s list of top ten scholarly books to have made the most impact this decade. < Back Ricardo Mendonca Adjunct Professor About Ricardo Fabrino Mendonça is Chair of the Department of Political Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, and has served since 2024 as President of UFMG’s Standing Committee on Artificial Intelligence. He coordinates Margem – Research Group on Democracy and Justice and serves as Deputy Director of the National Institute of Science and Technology in Digital Democracy (INCT.DD). He is also an associate researcher and long-term collaborator of the Centre for Deliberative Democracy, University of Canberra. He was a visiting scholar at the Center for the Study of Democracy at the University of California, Irvine, supported by a Fulbright fellowship. Over the course of his career, he has coordinated eleven research projects funded by national and international agencies. His research interests include democratic theory, contentious politics, and political communication. He is the co-author of Algorithmic Institutionalism (Oxford University Press, 2023; with V. Almeida and F. Filgueiras) and co-editor of Crises of Democracy and the Public Sphere (Editora UFMG, 2023, with R. Sarmento) and Research Methods in Deliberative Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2022, with S. Ercan, H. Asenbaum and N. Curato), among other books and numerous journal publications. His work has received several distinctions, including the Best Book Award from the Brazilian Political Science Association in 2024 and the Harrison Prize from the Political Studies Association (UK) in 2012. He has also received distinctions for excellence in teaching and supervision, including the prestigious CAPES Award for Academic Supervision on two occasions.

Nicole Curato < Back Strongmen of Asia: Democratic bosses and how to understand them Project Team: Nicole Curato Funded by the Norwegian Research Council (AU$1.8M via University of Oslo). Project Description This research project investigates a set of strongmen – including presently ruling, fledgling, or former strongmen – in order to compare and understand a political style increasingly dominant in South and Southeast Asia and which we preliminarily call ‘bossism’. These strongmen are explored through fieldwork, online ethnography and media analysis of original language sources. This project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council and administered by the University of Oslo. Nicole Curato is examining the case of the Philippines. Preliminary findings of her research are documented in Strongmen , Inc , published in Australian Foreign Affairs .
